|George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1872-1949) George Ivanovich Gurdjieff appeared in Moscow in 1913 with a fully developed system for inner development called The Fourth Way. His life before this is vague and obscured. Most believe he was born in 1872 in Alexandropol, Russia (present day Armenia) and spent a great deal of his life traveling throughout the world. After teaching his system in Moscow and St. Petersburg, in 1920 Gurdjieff and those close to him journeyed by foot to Constantinople (present day Istanbul). In 1922, he moved on to Western Europe, and by 1922 he had established the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man. He continued to teach the system and wrote numerous books until his death in 1949.

|Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986) “Friend, do not concern yourself with who I am; you will never know. I do not want you to accept anything I say. I do not want anything from any of you; I do not desire popularity; I do not want your flattery, your following. Because I am in love with life, I do not want anything. These questions are not of very great importance; what is of importance is the fact that you obey and allow your judgment to be perverted by authority. Your judgment, your mind, your affection, your life are being perverted by things which have no value, and herein lies sorrow” (Jiddu Krishnamurti)|
|Maurice Nicoll (1884-1953) “Humanity is regarded as unfinished, incomplete, imperfect. We have the possibility of completing ourselves, perfecting ourselves, and all that is necessary for this lies in us” (Maurice Nicoll). Born in 1884 in Scotland, Maurice Nicoll was known as a pioneer in psychology and medicine. He studied science at Caius College in Cambridge and went on to study in Paris, Berlin, and Vienna. In Zurich, he became Carl Jung’s principal supporter until he met P.D. Ouspensky in 1921. Following that he studied with G. I. Gurdjieff in 1922, and he continued to write on and teach these principles until his death in 1953. His writings are deep, personal and expressive.|
|P.D. Ouspensky (1878-1947) “I had come to the conclusion a long time ago that there was no escape from the labyrinth of contradictions in which we live except by an entirely new road, unlike anything hitherto known or used by us” (P.D. Ouspensky). Peter D. Ouspensky was born in Moscow in 1878. He left school to travel in search of something beyond this world. He traveled to India, Ceylon, and Egypt but found himself back in Saint Petersburg where he met G. I. Gurdjieff and studied with him for a few years. Ouspensky, an accomplished mathematician and journalist, began writing early in life publishing quite a few books. Highly influenced by George Gurdjieff, Ouspensky’s writings are intense and analytical, yet eloquent and stimulating.|
